The Mereland Chronicles | Writing

My First Ever Poem!

Every story begins with a spark. Sometimes it’s a scene, sometimes a feeling, sometimes it just pops into your head.

For The Mereland Chronicles, it was the latter.

Silhouette of a woman running at sunset on a hillside with the poem “Pulled from Death” overlaid; Lake District tones, moody golden light.

This short poem, “Pulled from Death,” was my first attempt at poetry. I wrote it to capture not only the tone of The Crier, the first book in the Mereland Chronicles series, but also the greater story that stretches beyond it. The imagery you see alongside the poem is taken from the book trailer that features these very lines. You can watch it, along with others from the series, on my website here: The Mereland Chronicles Book Trailers.

The poem came together as the series began to coalesce after that initial spark all those years ago. It’s both a reflection and a foreshadowing, a glimpse of the forces shaping the story’s world and the characters destined to confront them.

Pulled from death, a whisper on the tide…

Bound by duty, yet shackled by time.

The rightful has returned, to restore what was taken.

And the untamed will rise, unbound and unshaken.

Both the words and visuals hint at what’s to come across the series: reckoning, rebirth, and legacy. If you’ve read about the Claife Crier legend or followed The Crier’s journey so far, you might sense a familiar echo here. But there’s more waiting beneath the surface. This verse is only the beginning.

Oh, for those who’ve read The Crier, don’t assume the character depicted in the poem’s imagery is who you think it is.

📖 The Mereland Chronicles is a series rooted in folklore, betrayal, and the haunting beauty of the Cumbrian landscape. The first book, The Crier, arrives 16 October 2025, but this world has many more secrets yet to rise.
