🎃 The Custodian’s Cottage | A Short Tale from Mereland 🎃

👻 Read the story: The Custodian’s Cottage

There’s something about Halloween in the Lake District that stirs old stories back to life. The mists roll in over Furness Abbey, the woods fall silent, and the air seems to hold its breath.

A black and white photograph of the ruins of Furness Abbey, with rays of sunlight streaming through a large Gothic window. The surrounding landscape is misty, creating a dramatic and atmospheric scene.

So tonight (Halloween) felt like the right moment to share one of my earliest spooky ghost tales, The Custodian’s Cottage.

First published in New Tales of Old Vol. 1 (Black Ink Fiction, 2021), it is a ghost story rooted in the folklore of Furness Abbey.

Black and white photograph of an old stone cottage beneath a cloudy sky, its dark windows and weathered door adding to the eerie atmosphere. The upper window appears to show the ghostly face of a little girl, a haunting nod to The Custodian’s Cottage, a short story from The Mereland Chronicles universe by Paul J. Scribbans.
The real-world inspiration behind The Custodian’s Cottage. Look closely… the upper window! Is that a ghostly face?

This short story lives inside the Mereland world, the same haunted landscape that shapes The Mereland Chronicles.

You’ll find the same threads here: ancient places, restless spirits, and the sense that some histories refuse to stay buried.
